JAPAN: Anime Power! J-Pop! Rocks the World |
| Speaker: |
Dr Carolyn Stevens |
| Outline: |
With its distinctive art style, mature themes and mainstream soundtracks, Japanese Anime (animation) rejects the traditional paradigm that cartoons are only for kids. Anime, together with J-Pop are huge industries that not only export cutting edge creative content, but Japanese identity and culture as well.
In a new collaboration with Madman Entertainment, we aim to link critical academic analysis with the Asian pop cultural phenomenon.
We will explore the themes of consumer culture and fandom, as well as the extent to which J-Pop has had influence on the Western popular culture. This session will include screenings of Rurouni Kenshin and Naruto.
For this lecture, we feature Dr Carolyn Stevens from Asia Institute. She is Senior Lecturer in Japanese Studies at the University of Melbourne, and former Head of Japanese Studies (2004-2006). Her other main research interest is Japanese popular music. Dr. Stevens worked for several years in the 1990s as a consultant to a Japanese entertainment management agency and this experience in the industry led to publications on Japanese rock fans, rock video analysis and concert souvenir consumption. Her book cover for "Japanese Popular Music: Culture, Authenticity and Power' is designed by lead guitarist of the Alfee, TAKAMIZAWA Toshihiko.
This event is supported by Asia Institute, University of Melbourne and Madman Entertainment.
