Topic:  PASSAGE TO INDIA – A Book Club Journey through Contemporary India No.3
Speaker:  Dr Pradeep Taneja
Outline:  Explore contemporary India with our experts who will share and lead discussions on their favourite books. Passage to India reviews books monthly on Indian modern history, society and foreign policy.

Our third speaker – Dr Pradeep Taneja of The University of Melbourne – will focus on Indian foreign policy. Dr Taneja lectures in Chinese politics, political economy and international relations. Born and raised in India, he has also lived and worked in China. He earned his PhD from Griffith University and his MA from Jawaharial Nehru University, New Delhi.

Dr Taneja will be reviewing Engaging India: Diplomacy, Democracy, and the Bomb by Strobe Talbott, former US Deputy Secretary of State (1994-2001) under the Clinton administration. During this period India tested three nuclear weapons and author Strobe and Jaswant Singh, the Indian Foreign Minister at the time, were engaged in diplomatic negotiations spanning 10 locations, 7 countries and two and a half years. With over 20 years experience in journalism with TIME magazine, Strobe Talbott is the current President of The Brookings Institution.

Dr Taneja's review of this book will provide lessons as we discuss the wider foreign policy direction of the Australian government's engagement with India.

This event is presented by Asialink and Readings Books Music & Film.
