INDONESIA: Sadanand Dhume in Conversation with Linda Lopresti 26 May
Sadanand Dhume is the author of My Friend the Fanatic - an original and thought-provoking analysis of transnational Islam, framed within an engaging first-person travel narrative style. It is at times conversational, humorous and shocking—but always fascinating.
Dhume details his exploration of Indonesia with his friend and guide Herry, a fundamentalist who hero-worships Abu Bakar Bashir. Through the journey we are offered an insight into a part of our world that has received insufficient attention until now. This book has a particular significance for Australia—despite our nation’s close proximity to Indonesia there have been a lack of major works that deepen our understanding of its unique political and social trajectory. My Friend the Fanatic addresses this critical gap.
Linda Lopresti of ABC Radio National & Radio Australia will introduce and join Sadanand Dhume in conversation.
This event is presented by Asialink and Readings Books, Music & Film.
WHEN: Monday 26 May 2008 TIME: 6:30 PM WHERE: 1st Floor Executive Lounge, Alan Gilbert Building – 161 Barry Street, The University of Melbourne RSVP: Essential, email events@asialink.unimelb.edu.au with ‘Sadanand’ in the subject line.
