HEALTH: Securing Health in the Asia- Pacific |
| Outline: |
SARS, Bird Flu and other regional pandemics have highlighted that infectious disease and health issues for Australia has to be seen in the broader context of a healthy and prosperous region. This is recognised in the communiqué of the APEC Health Ministers meeting in Sydney last year to address health related threats from the aspect of livelihood, trade and security for the 2.6 billion people in the Asia-Pacific region. The topic now has a further relevance following the catastrophic effects of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar (Burma) and the associated risk of disease.
This lecture will be chaired by Associate Professor Peter Deutschmann, Associate Director of the Nossal Institute for Global Health at The University of Melbourne with our two speakers - Mr Murray Proctor and Reverend Tim Costello. Murray Proctor is the Deputy Director General, Programme Enabling Division & Australian Ambassador on HIV/AIDS of AusAID. With more than 25 years experience in aid and development, Mr Proctor was previously the Deputy Director General of AusAID's Asia Division. From 1999 to 2001, he also worked in the World Bank on East Timor reconstruction and public sector reform. In his current role as HIV/AIDS Ambassador, Mr Proctor encourages political, business and community leaders in the Asian Pacific region to provide the direction and support needed to halt the spread of HIV/AIDS. Reverend Tim Costello is CEO of World Vision Australia since 2004. Reverend Costello was co-chair of the Families and Communities panel at the 2020 Ideas Summit. In 2004, he was awarded Victorian of the Year and in 2005 he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) as well as the Victorian Australian of the Year for Public and Community Service.
This event is presented by Asialink and the Nossal Institute for Global Health, both at The University of Melbourne.
