Outline:  Asialink together with the US Consulate General are pleased to present James Kelly, the former US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs at an Asialink Public Lecture.

James Kelly led the US delegation into the first three sessions of the Six Party Talks. The Six-Party Talks address one of the core issues threatening the security of the North East Asian region – North Korea's Nuclear Weapons Programme. Through the six-party talks the two Koreas, Japan, China, Russia and the US seek to negotiate peaceful solutions to the pressing nuclear issue. These talks present one of the toughest multilateral and diplomatic challenges.

James Kelly will draw from experiences inside the Six Party Talks as one of the top US negotiators in the area of East Asian security to share his invaluable knowledge on bi-lateral and multi-lateral relationships, diverse and conflicting priorities, and influential domestic issues affecting security in East Asia.

Previous to his role as the US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs from 2001 to 2005, Mr Kelly was the President of the Pacific Forum, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Honolulu. From 1983 to 1986, he was at the Pentagon as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for International Security Affairs (East Asia and Pacific).

Mr Kelly is a graduate of the US Naval Academy and the School of Business Administration, Harvard University where he earned an MBA.
