SUPER REGIONAL – ANZ’S ASIA STRATEGY |
| Speaker: |
Alex Thursby, Group Managing Director Asia Pacific, ANZ |
| Outline: |
With Australian businesses now more than three times more dependent on Asia than they are on the US, the Asian region is more important to Australia’s economic well-being than ever before.
ANZ CEO Michael Smith announced his vision of a bank with global connections but focused on one region, Asia. ANZ has a substantive footprint in Asia built over the past four decades. It has a network of offices in 12 Asian countries which provide corporate and commercial banking, trade finance, corporate finance, treasury and selected personal and private banking services.
ANZ has developed strategic partnerships through investments in local Asian banks with established franchises. During 2007, ANZ invested in Malaysia’s AMMB Holdings Berhad, China’s Shanghai Rural Commercial Bank, Vietnam’s Saigon Securities Incorporation (SSI) and ANZ Vientiane Commercial Bank in Laos, to bring ANZ’s total number of regional bank partnerships to seven, in addition to three regional credit card partnerships.
Alex Thursby was appointed Group Managing Director, Asia Pacific in June 2007. Alex’s role is to consolidate all of ANZ’s Asia Pacific businesses and lead the Group’s strategic expansion in Asia.
Alex joins ANZ after 21 years with Standard Chartered Bank in senior wholesale banking roles in Hong Kong, London, Indonesia, Singapore and the UAE.
