Five Minutes to Midnight - Terrorism as a Family Activity: Understanding Jemaah Islamiyah's Social Ties |
| Outline: |
The capture of Indonesias most wanted men from Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), Abu Dujana and Zarkasih, has been heralded as a counter-terrorism success by law enforcement authorities. But are we now safe from JIs terrorist activities?
As a part of Five Minutes to Midnight lecture series, this lecture will examine the ways in which JI has been able to draw in women and children, and how it can provide a social security network for members. Understanding some of these linkages underscores the importance of thinking beyond law enforcement as a way of addressing extremism.
Sidney Jones is the Southeast Asia Project Director of the International Crisis Group in Jakarta. Previously, she worked for Ford Foundation, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch, where she was director of the Asia program.
In her current position, she prepares with her team analytical reports on the sources of conflict and violence in the region. Her team has also looked at Islamic radicalism, producing a series of reports on JI and other jihadist groups in the region.
Ms Jones holds degrees in Oriental Studies and International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania and in 2006 received an honorary doctorate from the New School in New York.
This event is presented by Asialink.
