Topic:  Five Minutes to Midnight: Nuclear Threat in Asia
Speaker:  Professor Hugh White
Outline:  On 17th January 2007, our human race has been declared to be five minutes away from destruction - the Midnight - according to the Doomsday Clock.

Join Asialink for our four lecture series on the Doomsday Clock Theory with a focus on contemporary Asia, as we explore subjects of nuclear threat, climate change, terrorism, and public health.

The Clock has moved two minutes closer to Midnight since 2006, with the incipient
strategic-nuclear competition between the US and China as well as the possibility of the second nuclear age, with North Korea conducting nuclear weapon testing and show of nuclear ambitions by Iran, India, and Pakistan.

The keynote inaugural speaker for Five Minutes to Midnight series is Professor Hugh White who will start the series by providing insights into the nuclear arms race in the Asian region. Professor White has worked in strategic policy and related fields for two decades and has served as an intelligence analyst with the Office of National Assessments, a journalist with the Sydney Morning Herald and as senior adviser on the staffs of Defence Minister Kim Beazley and Prime Minister Bob Hawke.

This event is presented by Asialink.
