Pakistani government minister Zilla Huma Usman was assassinated a couple of weeks ago reportedly "for campaigning for emancipation of women." This tragedy highlights the ongoing struggle for women's rights across the subcontinent. To coincide with International Women's Day, Asialink will present "In the Aftermath of an Assassination: Women's Rights Today in South Asia".
Featured international speaker, Rohini Weerasinghe, is the director of Kantha Shakthi, a Sri Lankan organization that partners with International Womens Development Agency (IWDA) to empower women socially, politically and economically. She is visiting Australia as part of IWDAs International Womens Day activities.
Dr Tahmina Rashid is a Lecturer in International Development at RMIT University. Her research focuses on the political and economic situation of women in Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Robyn Kilpatrick has been an active member of Amnesty International since 1984 working internationally on the organisation's research and action techniques. She has been active on issues relating to South Asia and will give an overview of Amnestys work across the region.
