The Hajj - A personal Story |
| Outline: |
Every year, from all corners of the globe, up to 3 million people with only their creed and humanity in common, come together for the hajj, Islams annual pilgrimage to Mecca. Blue-eyed Russians and Bosnians are joined by green-eyed Afghans. Chinese pilgrims walk from a country they left illegally and Pakistani women arrive after saving one rupee every day for 18 years. Others arrive from Africa, North and South America, Australia, Europe and Asia.
Earlier this year Waleed Aly, lawyer, newspaper columnist with The Age and Executive Member of the Islamic Council of Victoria, joined millions of others in a spiritual pilgrimage that emphasises the unity and equality of all people. In his presentation Waleed will share experiences of the hajj and his journey from Melbourne to Mount Arafat, Mina and finally the sacred city of Mecca as he followed in the footsteps of the prophets.
(Please note, as Waleeds talk falls in the Muslim fasting month of Ramadhan, there will be a short break from 6.30 to 6.40pm for Waleed and other Muslims present to break their fast and pray. Dates and water will be provided for those breaking their fast.)
The Asia Education Foundation with the support of Asialink and the Islamic Council of Victoria presents this program.
