US Economic Engagement in Asia and implications for Australia |
| Speaker: |
Nicholas Lardy, Institute for International Economics |
| Outline: |
In this special lunchtime lecture, US economist Nicholas R. Lardy will position the United States as a key player in Asian economic affairs as well as an indispensable Australian trading partner looking forward.
Lardy will underscore how Australia's trading relationship with the United States and our bilateral FTA is not a zero sum proposition. He will examine the complex calculus by which the United States helps drive and direct Asian economic development while using that growth to expand its own presence in Asian markets. His most recent book is China: The Balance Sheet (Public Affairs, 2006) to which he contributed chapters on China's domestic economy and China in the world economy has been the subject of much discussion in the US.
Nicholas Lardy is a senior fellow at the Institute for International Economics in Washington, DC. He came to the Institute in March 2003 from the Brookings Institution, where he was a senior fellow in the Foreign Policy Studies Program from 1995 until 2003 and served as Interim Director of Foreign Policy Studies in 2001.
Asialink is pleased to present a unique opportunity to hear from one of the worlds leading experts on US/China relations and the economics of the region.
