Outline:  Susan Scollay showcases the female artisan by describing the Muslim woman's place in traditional textile production in Iran, Central Asia and Anatolia. She examines the motifs used in rugs and textiles, the reasons for their production, and their utility in trade, patronage, worship, decoration, and in the creation of communal identity and institutional spaces.

Susan Scollay is an internationally recognised expert in historic and eastern textiles. As a PhD candidate in the School of Historical and European Studies at La Trobe University, Susan is currently researching the role of textiles in the architecture and ritual of the Ottoman Turkish court. Susan is a contributing editor to HALI, the prestigious international journal of carpet, textile and Islamic art.
