Topic:  Sense of Islam Lecture - The Female Sphere of the Turkish Bath
Speaker:  Dr Susan Aykut
Outline:  In this Sense of Islam lecture, Dr Susan Aykut discusses the social sphere of the bathhouse, with particular reference to the institution of the (Ottoman) Turkish bath. She will describe the cultural meanings of cleanliness, of body hair, and of beautification in an Islamic context, and explore the vital importance of the bathhouse to female social life and domestic power.

Dr Susan Aykut is an Ottoman historian who has long been engaged by the tenets of Orientalist scholarship and art and the contentions of its critics. She is currently the Deputy Director of the Institute for Public History in the School of Historical Studies at Monash University.
