Outline:  The United States is the world's main superpower; China is beginning to exercise its own sphere of influence. The relationship between the two impacts on the world economy as a whole and how each deals with the complexities of the relationship also has a far-reaching effect. Join Dr Bates Gill as he discusses from the US perspective, how this relationship will be managed in the future. How will the US approach China on issues such as Taiwan, democracy and human rights?

Dr Bates Gill holds the Freeman Chair in China Studies at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Washington DC. A specialist in East Asian foreign policy, China, security, non-proliferation, military modernisation, Dr Bates has written extensively on the US-China relationship. Professor Bruce Jacobs, Professor of Asian Languages and Studies at Monash University, will respond. A specialist in Chinese and Taiwan politics and society, Professor Jacob's publications include many books, journal articles and book chapters in Chinese and English.
